Hailing from three generations of medical professionals, Barbara A. Benson, CNMT, RDMS desired to continue the family legacy and has gone on to excel as a certified nuclear medicine technologist (CNMT) and registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS). Affiliated with Coastal Cardiology since 2001 and Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, California since 1986 as a CNMT and RDMS, she incorporates equipment testing on nuclear cameras and dose calibrators, provides patient assistance and conducts tests in such areas as cardiac imaging, infusion and the proper dosing of radioactive materials.
Alongside her primary work, Ms. Benson had the opportunity to participate in numerous clinical studies, including one that included the use of a monoclonal antibody imaging series that resulted in approval by the Food and Drug Administration. In addition, she has been active as a coordinator for the American Heart Association, a professional education committee chair and clinical board member of the American Cancer Society’s Morrison County chapter and a member and past president of the West Tennessee Organization of Nuclear Medicine Technologists, for which she honored for Outstanding Service as President in 1979. To remain aware of her field, Ms. Benson holds membership with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.
At the start of her endeavors, Ms. Benson earned an associate degree from Brandywine Junior College, now known as Weidner College, in 1968 and gained early experience working at a private doctor’s office and a medical center in Wilmington, Delaware. In five years’ time, she hopes to retire from her full-time schedule and dedicate her time to volunteering at a homeless shelter in the area. She also wishes to spend more time with her family and travel. Ms. Benson attributes her professional success to her passion and desire to help others. Her advice to those aspiring to work in her field is to always keep your eye on the goal and do not let anyone discourage you.
